The histories of Esau’s descendants are filled with names that will both become extinct and will become a thorn in the people of Israel’s side. It was interesting that there were “chiefs” which seems fairly normal that people would need leaders to organize and galvanize people, but then there were kings. This is a great contrast to the people of Israel, who after being ruled for 400 years in Egypt would have God as there king for decades. BUT – then they too wanted a king. Why wasn’t a king good? Because God was the King of the Earth, Edom, Canaan, Egypt and beyond!
Carnal people want to be ruled by a king. People walking in the Spirit want to be ruled by God. Kings were looked to for strength, wisdom and protection – isn’t that God’s place? Let’s break it down to our lives. Do we want a king? Do we want the government to take care of us, or have we anointed ourselves as king? I hear the Spirit saying, “Terry, you need no one else but God. In Him is your living, breathing and being.”
